Latest revised building timeline

This month we have received a revised building timeline from the Ministry of Education.

Design phase – March 2015 – March 2016.  This is broken down into 4 phases:

  • master plan – 3 months (Mar 2015 – June 2015)
  • preliminary design – 3 months (July 2015 – Sep 2015)

We are now moving into this next phase:
  • developed design – 3 months (Oct 2015 – Dec 2015)
  • detailed design – 3 months (Jan 2016 – Mar 2016)
  • tender/consent – 2 / 3months (Mar 2016 – Apr/May 2016 – highly dependent on how it takes for CCC to approve documentations.  Cannot commence construction until this has been received).
  • Construction commence – Apr/ May 2016 with an estimate of 12 – 18 months construction period.

The above is subject to movement depending on what happens with decanting and the construction methodology.

Project Brief

Early this year, I spent a considerable amount of time, putting together a project brief for the Design Team. The template and format of this brief was designed by the Ministry of Education. I was supported to write this by Lorraine Moss and Vikanda Bagrie, from the MOE, with a dual purpose of our brief being used a) to focus the attention of the Design Team to the specific needs of Beckenham School; and b) as an intial  example to share with other schools who will subsequently need to write their own brief for this process.

The information in the brief was collated from a variety of sources, including staff meetings over the past 18 months, school documentation, Board of Trustees input, feedback from students and feedback from families via our whānau hui.

Accompanying the brief, was a pdf of annotated photographs, designed to show the Design Team what learning and being part of the wider school community at Beckenham School looks like.

You can read the brief (which is not brief!) here:
